On the occasion of the Lunar New Year in 2017, “Folk Paintings – the Remake”, a collection of 20 paintings were introduced to art-enthusiasts in Hanoi in Xuan Lam’s debut exhibition. With the combination of rough texture from pencil drawing and the smooth gradient colors in graphic, the project succeeded in bringing the vivid folk paintings laden with spring vibes closer to the youth. Moreover, it recapture the nostalgic ambience of the traditional Lunar New Year, when folk paintings were indispensible part of every family in the North of Vietnam during the Tet Holiday.
To Xuan Lam’s surprise, the artworks from “Folk Paintings – the Remake” met with favorable reception from the public. In the past 3 years, Xuan Lam’s folk paintings have been ubiquitous in the capital city of Vietnam, from the art street in the Old Quarter, to the local stores where Xuan Lam’s works of art are printed on T-shirts, hoodies, notebooks, and tote bags, etc.
The widespread support from the public has become a strong motivation for Xuan Lam to keep telling the story of folk paintings through his artworks but with different media and a breath of fresh air in the second exhibition named “Rendezvous between the Old and the New”.
The folk paintings on display at “Rendezvous between the Old and the New” will go well beyond the frames, confirming their vitality among other trends of contemporary culture and giving rise to an unprecedented rendezvous between the Old and the New, between the tradition and the modernity, or between the exhibition-goers and the unique artworks. The exhibition is another effort of Xuan Lam in bringing folk paintings closer to the youth, and expresses his self-interrogation regarding his own style which he has been pursuing in the past few years.
Come to “Rendezvous between the Old and the New” to take a step into the world of folklore, where you may come across familiar figures such as a joyous wedding of rats, graceful female musicians playing traditional instruments of Vietnam, national heroines who shattered the glass ceiling as brilliant and brave warriors on the battlefields, etc. And just like that, gently and slowly, you will see the traditional colors that represent the soul of our country, and be inspired to cherish the traditional values that stand the test of time.
The exhibition is sponsored by Contemporary Art Space located in Vietnamese Women’s Museum
